Remember second marriages often took place late in life

The Comyn family in England has many notable members and has been traced back to the 16^th Century by myself, an aunt and a distant relation in America. Although the line looked straightforward, information in a will not only seemed to contradict what had been established, and also seemed quite impossible to reconcile.

The facts as originally established were as follows

Stephen Comyn and his wife Elizabeth Tay had children Edward, Elizabeth Catherine Stephen Robert and Thomas born between 1735 and 1748.

Stephen Comyn (elder’s) wife Elizabeth died in 1760

Stephen Comyn (younger) married Mary Wilsonn in 1763 and had a family

Stephen Comyn (elder) died in 1773

Stephen’s will (PCC 1773) made no sense on the basis of this information. However I found his second marriage tucked away in an uncopied register. Once this was found, the situation became clear

Stephen Comyn (elder) had married his daughter-in-law Mary’s sister Anna Wilsonn in 1766

Stephen Comyn (elder) and Anna had children Anna and Elizabeth

The results of the Comyn research have been widely published by a second cousin from Canada and are included now in the Mormon database.
